A volunteer nursing student with one of her senior patients in India.

Volunteering as a nurse in India is an interesting and challenging experience. You will see a medical and healthcare system that in many ways reflects the West but is interspersed with local influences. You will also come across tropical diseases rarely encountered in the West and conditions that have not been diagnosed until they reach advanced stages.

As a nursing volunteer, your role is mainly observational. You can specialise in a variety of areas including the ICU, in-patient ward, theatre, dialysis unit and the diabetic ward. You can also help in the maternity department. If you show enthusiasm and become a valued member of the team, you may find you are given more to do.

The doctors and nurses are keen for you to learn from them and will be happy to answer your questions. The hospitals can get very busy and your itinerary may change daily, but there is so much for you to see and to get involved in while shadowing the nurses and doctors. The breadth of knowledge and experience that you will receive in India is extensive; you will be working with doctors who enjoy the opportunity to impart their specialised knowledge to enthusiastic students.

Options for Nursing in India

Our nursing placements are located in Jaipur. The medical team also organises visits to other centres in and around Jaipur including a centre for traditional medicine, a mental health centre and a leprosarium. Normally, once a month an outreach project is organised. This can be focused on geriatric care, community health nursing or in tropical diseases.

A placement specialising in Ayurvedic treatment is also available. Nursing placements in India usually involve rotations between different departments, but if you would like to specialise in one area, we can arrange for you to concentrate your time in a particular department at one hospital.

Volunteers live with local host families who will show you true Indian hospitality. You will also meet with other Projects Abroad volunteers during your time off and explore the local area.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
