Mongolia is a good choice for nursing students wishing to take an elective abroad. You will gain a great deal of valuable work-experience alongside skilled nurses and experience nursing practice in a developing country. The facilities are generally of a very basic standard and patients will often have travelled vast distances to attend appointments.
Nursing projects in Mongolia are based in the capital, Ulaanbaatar. Nurses are usually placed at Central hospital, a large facility, and there are a number of private complimentary health clinics where you can also spend some time. Your exact placement within the hospital will depend on your chosen specialism.
Projects Abroad are able to work with you and your university to ensure your placement will meet the specific requirements of your elective. We have experienced in-country staff who are on hand to answer your questions and help with any paperwork you may have. In Mongolia you will be assigned a qualified midwife or doctor who will mentor you throughout your stay, discuss specific case studies with you and answer your questions.
Take extensive notes as you work as these will be useful to refer back to in discussions with your supervisor. The supervisors on our nursing placements in Mongolia have a lot of time for keen Nursing students.
Your Role on a Nursing Elective
In accordance with Mongolian law you will not be able to directly treat patients. As a Nursing Elective student you will have a mainly observational role, shadowing nurses. If you are enthusiastic and show your skills to your fellow nurses, you may well find you get more to do. You could help to take basic observations, help prepare equipment for surgery, transfer patients to surgery, observe surgery, and check patients post surgery.
You have the option to attend medical outreach projects. Previous programmes have included basic medical check-ups at a community centre for homeless people, and assisting with a hand hygiene campaign at one of the local hospitals. Projects Abroad also offer monthly workshops for Elective students that could be about traditional treatments, the history of the Mongolian healthcare system or practical lessons on basic medical procedures.
During your placement you will live with a Mongolian host family. They are extremely hospitable and welcoming. You will also become part of the Projects Abroad volunteer community and have plenty of other volunteers to meet with on your time off. There is much to see in the area and a lively bunch of volunteers to experience it with.
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
