If you are looking for a place to gain experience in Dentistry while studying, then why not come to Togo. Dentistry in Togo will be different from what you are used to at home and will open your eyes to the reality of treatment in a developing country.
Dentistry volunteers will be placed at a public hospital that is also a teaching and research facility. As a Dentistry volunteer, your role will be that of an intern. Given that the dentistry profession in Togo is very different from what you may be used to, you will spend the first week observing.
As you get more familiar with treatments and the way things are done in Togo, and if you have demonstrated a good knowledge of dentistry, you may get a more hands on role. You could then help with consultations, general check-ups and observe more complex procedures, assisting the dentist by being an extra pair of hands.
Outreach Work in Togo
You could also take part in dental outreach work with qualified dentistry volunteers. Here you could help assist the qualified dentists in schools and care centres while they do dental checks and carry out minor procedures. You can help with oral hygiene awareness, for example by showing the children how to brush their teeth properly.
Volunteers on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
You will live with a Togolese host family while volunteering as a dentist. You will have access to our Projects Abroad volunteer community and have the opportunity to explore the area with them on your time off from your placement.
You can join the Dentistry projects in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the hospital or centre please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
