Dentistry volunteers work at a Centro de Salud, which offers dental care to the public. Centros de Salud are public health clinics open to everyone in Cochabamba, regardless of their ability to pay.
Volunteers are assigned to a specific Centro de Salud and will work as a dental assistant alongside the qualified local dentists. You will have the opportunity to observe and help out with a huge variety of dental procedures, from fillings to root canals and tooth extractions, and may even have the opportunity to observe complex orthodontic surgeries. The public health system in Bolivia offers dental care and education to children and adults of all ages.
The clinics have very basic facilities and often a lack of funding for sufficient staff and medical resources. Volunteers are therefore needed to help and your work will be greatly appreciated.
Outreach Work in Bolivia
Volunteers, in the past, have taken part in fluoride campaigns as part of a community outreach project, which is carried out alongside Projects Abroad Care volunteers.
Whether you are planning to study dentistry, a trained professional looking to gain some work experience, or somewhere in-between, Projects Abroad Dentistry placements in Bolivia offer a great opportunity to both help and learn at a project that is literally one of a kind.
The Centros de Salud are open all day, from 8am - 12 noon and 2pm - 6pm. Volunteers usually work either the morning or afternoon shift, but depending on your energy, you could also choose to work a full day.
Requirements for Volunteering in Bolivia
Volunteers on Dentistry projects in Bolivia should be aged 18 or older and will need intermediate Spanish in order to communicate directly with the majority of dentists and patients. If you lack confidence in your Spanish language ability you can take a Spanish Language course or join a Teaching or Care project before joining your dental programme. This gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills before starting the Dentistry part of your placement.
For the duration of your stay you will live with a host family, experiencing day-to-day Bolivian life. You will also have the opportunity to soak up the vibrancy of the city of Cochabamba with the Projects Abroad volunteer community.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Bolivia Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
