High School Special Medicine volunteers pose with teachers and nurses following a medical outreach at a primary school in Cusco

This placement gives you a unique opportunity to observe the medical profession first hand in a developing country. Projects Abroad works in both private and public hospitals allowing you to observe a wide variety of medical treatments in different departments.

High School Special medical volunteers will divide their time between observing different procedures and attending medical workshops. Throughout your time with us in Peru you will learn a lot about local Peruvian health issues and treatments. Volunteers will spend some of their time shadowing local doctors and will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss different patient’s cases. Your project with us will include a few Spanish lessons in order to help you learn some Spanish words related to the medical field which will be useful when you are in the hospitals observing different cases.

During your two weeks in Peru you will participate in a medical outreach programme providing medical care or health education to local communities who would otherwise not have access to help.

Volunteers will be based in the Sacred Valley and will live with local host families.

On the weekend you’ll visit the breath-taking site of Machu Picchu that Peru is famous for, and soak up the atmosphere in one of the bustling and colourful markets found throughout the Sacred Valley.

Those joining us on the four week programme will get extra visits and activities arranged during the other weekends.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2017 High School Specials Impact Report.

On Wednesday 21st February, Projects Abroad’s Rebecca Walton will be giving an online presentation about our High School Special Projects. You can watch Rebecca's presentation and ask questions from the comfort of your own home. Register for this webinar.
