Volunteers on the Building High School Special project will assist with school repairs, and building playgrounds to provide vulnerable children with a safe learning and playing environment. Volunteers might also help with the renovation of houses of disabled people, whose homes are in poor condition.
This might include building and installing play equipment, excavation and land clearing, mixing concrete, laying concrete, laying bricks, rendering walls, roof and ceiling repairs, replacement of doors, painting, cleaning and other minor renovation work.
In addition volunteers will participate in at least one building outreach activity, which will also involve minor repairs and painting, to improve conditions in a disadvantaged community.
Volunteers will always work under the supervision of a skilled building supervisor.
At the weekend, volunteers will go on a trip to one of the island's famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world.
