Building and Care in Myanmar
High School Specials for 15-18 Year Olds
- Placement location: Inle Lake, Yangon
- Types of placement: To assist with the construction of houses in poorer communities and help at a school for the deaf
- Accommodation: Hostel/guest house
- Age Requirements: 15-18 years old
This High School Special consists of a mixture of hands-on building work and time spent interacting with and caring for children at a school for the deaf.
The building section of the work will see the volunteers living in the Inle Lake area, working alongside local carpenters to build a traditional Burmese stilt house for a family in need, while also interacting with local villagers and Buddhist monks.
At the school for the deaf in Yangon, volunteers help prepare and run educational games that will help local children develop their social, physical and cognitive skills, as well as improve their overall health and hygiene.
In the evenings volunteers will be able to socialise together and take part in cultural activities, such as traditional meals and local dances. On weekends, you will have the opportunity to explore the country’s many beautiful temples and picturesque landscape and markets.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2017 High School Specials Impact Report.
On Wednesday 21st February, Projects Abroad’s Rebecca Walton will be giving an online presentation about our High School Special Projects. You can watch Rebecca's presentation and ask questions from the comfort of your own home. Register for this webinar.
