What you'll be doing on your Occupational Therapy programme in Sri Lanka:
- Shadow and learn directly from medical professionals
- Work in an Occupational Therapy unit at a local hospital
- Assist in organising activities for movement development
- Improve your skills through medical workshops
- Assist with outreach programmes in the local area
- Observe patient assessments and treatment sessions conducted by qualified OTs, including the use of splints, adaptive devices, and other therapeutic equipment
- Help position, transfer, and mobilise patients safely under supervision
- Guide patients through simple self-care or motor coordination tasks such as daily living training (e.g., feeding, dressing, grooming), or exercises
We also offer an option to complete your placement at a local centre, specialising in assisting people affected by cerebral palsy, including the families of diagnosed individuals. Observe and learn from professionals as you help patients implement treatment plans for cerebral palsy.
How does it work?
Ready to start your Sri Lanka adventure? Here are some things to bear in mind:
- You must join a project for a minimum of 2 weeks and up to 4 weeks, as this is a Turing Scheme requirement
- There are 3 places for 2 week projects and 3 places for 4 week projects.
- You can choose whichever project you like from our options in Sri Lanka.
- You must travel any time between the 1st of September 2025 and the 31st of August 2026, and must complete your experience by the 31st of August 2026.
- You will receive a special £250 Northumbria University discount from the website prices. This discount will be added to your invoice after registration.
How do I apply?
You can apply for a place with Turing funding through the Northumbria University Student Portal. They’ll confirm how much funding you can expect to receive through the Turing Scheme if successful.
Once your access to Turing funding is confirmed, you'll need to pay a £195 deposit to confirm your place on a trip to Sri Lanka. You’ll then have until two months before your departure date to pay the final balance.
