The medical facilities in Jamaica have more limited resources and are different from those in developed countries. Although Jamaica was one of the first countries to establish a national health service a lot more needs to be done to improve health care. However, you are likely to encounter many diseases that are less common than in Europe and North America including malaria, diabetes, sickle cell anaemia and rare cancers.

Medical volunteers based in Mandeville work at the Mandeville Regional Hospital, or at a health centre.

Medical students who are at least in their fourth year can be placed at the Mandeville Regional Hospital. Medical students who are in years 1-3, pre-medical students or anyone seeking some form of medical experience will be placed at a health centre.

At the hospital you will spend time working in both in-patient and out-patient services in general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics, gynaecology, and paediatrics. The Health Department and health centres offer a variety of services including an adolescent health clinic, wellness clinic, child health, curative health, family planning and health programme and sexually transmitted infection clinics.

Volunteering in a Hospital in Jamaica

Doctors welcome volunteers with a range of experiences, so long as you are enthusiastic and keen to participate. Your role will be only  observational, however, we encourage you to show initiative and build a good rapport with your colleagues. Your supervisor will ensure that you work in a variety of areas during your placement, and learn as much as possible about medical practice in Jamaica.

Medicine volunteers need to be at least 18 years old.

Our Medical and Health Care Project Officer organises regular workshops for our Medicine & Healthcare volunteers. These meetings will provide you with a deeper insight into the healthcare system in Jamaica. They will also provide an opportunity to become familiar with the most common illnesses in the country and to discuss and share the work that you do at your placement.

Volunteering on a Medical Outreach Programme in Jamaica

As a Medicine volunteer, you also have the opportunity to participate in our monthly outreach programmes in Jamaica. Through these initiatives, which include health awareness presentations, you will be able to help the local people learn how to live a healthy lifestyle. You will receive thorough training from a qualified regsitered nurse and you will, therefore, be able to offer free health care assistance to community members who may not have access to the local services. All outreach programmes are run under the guidance and supervision of a qualified local medical personnel as well as a Projects Abroad member of staff.

Whichever volunteer Medicine placement you choose in Jamaica you will live with a local host family, who will provide your meals and a real taste of Jamaican hospitality. When you aren’t at work there is plenty to do in and around Mandeville, and our lively, diverse volunteer community means there are always other volunteers and Jamaicans around to make friends with.

You can join the Medicine project in Jamaica for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. Please be aware that the number of departments you can experience may be limited and you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Jamaica Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills. Read more about the opportunities for skilled volunteers in Jamaica.
