We have over 20 years of experience collaborating with medical professionals. We will provide you with a placement that not only meets your elective requirements but also gives you a full and rewarding experience of the country in which you are based. We arrange your accommodation, meals and insurance, and have strong in-country support to make sure your time abroad runs as smoothly as possible.

If you are searching for a placement with:

  • specific specialties
  • the chance to make a difference in a developing country
  • a new and exotic backdrop to your studies

Why not let Projects Abroad do all the hard work for you?

Taking an Elective Placement with Projects Abroad

In developing countries students will encounter diseases and conditions that are rarely seen in Europe or North America, such as malaria, leprosy and polio. Furthermore, due to a lack of both general health education and money to pay for treatment, cases tend to be far more advanced than you will normally see in western hospitals.

Medical Student Electives Overseas

Because of the limited resources available in some of the countries where we work, our medical colleagues are glad of extra help - and this is likely to come across in the way you are received by the staff in the clinics and hospitals where you work, as well as the patients you work with.

As an elective student you will have acquired considerable knowledge and skills from your training so far. You will have the opportunity to share these skills and you may often be able to teach valuable skills to less experienced volunteers who can then apply these during their work.

There may also be opportunities to work with volunteers from other healthcare professions to create a functional and effective multidisciplinary team environment.

If you are not a medical student or would rather take part in one of our regular Medicine & Healthcare projects, please visit our Medicine & Healthcare Projects page.

Claire Kirkwood, Conservation & Environment volunteer in Kenya"I have loved every minute of my time on my elective placement in Mongolia, at times it has been frustrating but I wouldn't change a thing. When I leave I will be sad to go but I'm sure I will find an excuse to return. I would certainly recommend Mongolia as an elective destination with a difference, the challenges won't be easy but for me the rewards were plenty."
