Shark Conservation in Fiji – Join a group trip this August!

Projects Abroad Fiji Shark Conservation volunteers take part in a dive

If you only have a short period of time free this summer, a 2 week volunteering experience on our Shark Conservation Project is the ideal getaway. Running from Sunday 9th August to Saturday 22nd August you will experience the wonders of Fiji whilst contributing to important conservation work.

Whether you’re a budding conservationist, a lover of wildlife, or just looking for a challenging and worthwhile experience, this is truly the opportunity of a lifetime. Located in Pacific Harbour, on the south coast of Fiji’s main island of Viti Levu, the Fiji Shark Conservation Project offers you the chance to get up close to some of the most endangered and misunderstood animals in the world.

You’ll have the chance to work on pioneering shark protection projects, alongside respected scientists and shark research experts. Take part in unforgettable dives, gain practical research experience and make a meaningful contribution to the sustainability of Fiji’s marine ecosystem.

The project is made up of five key elements, which volunteers will be directly involved in:

  • PADI Dive Certification Course
  • Research Training and Survey Dives
  • Project AWARE Shark Conservation Diver Course
  • Juvenile Shark Tagging Programme
  • Mangrove Restoration and Community Education

The primary aim of the Shark Conservation Project in Fiji is to protect and conserve the eight species of sharks that inhabit Shark Reef, as well as the many other species present in Fiji’s waters.

As with all Projects Abroad Conservation projects we strive to involve the local communities in our programmes. We work closely with local and international marine conservation organisations, including the WWF Global Shark Programme. The Fijian Government is in full support of the shark protection work in Fiji and sharks are currently at the top of the political conservation agenda.

You can read more about the aims of the project in our Shark Conservation Management Plan.
