Every year, during the school holidays, more than a thousand teenagers travel across the world with Projects Abroad. Their adventures help them develop new skills, enhance their global perspective, and contribute to global initiatives.

Every High School Programme provides the chance to build industry-specific skills, boost confidence, independence, and adaptability, and immerse participants in a new culture. All you need to do is choose what you want to do and where you want to go!

Here, you’ll find a list of the five most popular projects for teen participants from different regions around the world.

The UK:

British volunteers are the market with the most variation in their chosen destinations. You will find them all over the world, but the most popular projects among our UK participants are:

(Honourable mention) Football coaching in Ghana – though not in the top five, our British participants love to take their passion for the beautiful game to the rural hills of Ghana. There, they share their knowledge and support the coaching of local children with training exercises and even a mini tournament.

France:

French participants commonly join nursing and healthcare projects and enjoy travelling to Cambodia and Vietnam due to the French history in the region. It also provides a great opportunity to learn English by communicating with other volunteers from around the world.

(Honourable mention) Culture & Adventure in Cambodia – for a more laid-back travel option, our French participants love the Culture & Adventure project in Cambodia with an unmatched opportunity to immerse in the local culture.

Europe:

We also attract a lot of participants from Europe, including Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, Italy, and Spain. There are subtle variations across countries, but here are the most popular projects across all European participants:

(Honourable mention) Sea Turtle, Monkey, & Wildlife Conservation in Costa Rica – a popular choice among European volunteers (but just missing out on the top five), this project gives them the opportunity to work with wildlife far beyond what they’re used to in different ecosystems across the beautiful nation of Costa Rica.

The US & Canada:

Participants from North America tend to value the professional development aspect of our experiences above all else, which is why medical projects make up all of the top three most popular projects. These give them an excellent opportunity to outshine the competition when applying to medical school.

(Honourable mention) Archaeology in Peru – very niche but well loved, volunteers from North America and Canada love the archaeology project in Peru as it gives them a competitive edge in university and job applications in a tough industry. beyond what they’re used to in different ecosystems across the beautiful nation of Costa Rica.

Australia & New Zealand:

With Australia and New Zealand operating on opposite seasons to our northern hemisphere friends, our popular projects are influenced by the time of year, and proximity-with the Top 5 locations all being in Asia and the Pacific.

(Honourable mention) Sea Turtle & Coastal Conservation in the Maldives – travelling to the (somewhat) nearby, beautiful, coral archipelago of the Maldives gives participants from Australia and New Zealand the chance to dive in crystal clear waters and support sea turtle rehabilitation.

Japan:

Japanese participants tend to operate differently to the rest of the world, with many projects having the added benefit of the chance to learn English in a dedicated environment. They can be shy and reserved when travelling, but really value the experience of immersing themselves in new cultures.

(Honourable mention) Volunteer Shark Conservation in Fiji – one of our more thrill-seeking projects, Japanese participants love the shark dives included as part of our Fiji marine conservation project. It’s also quite easy to get to from Japan, and they get a diving qualification included!
