A Projects Abroad French Teaching volunteer instructs students during a lesson in Cochabamba

Volunteering as a French teacher in Bolivia is an excellent way to gain classroom experience while helping students to improve their French language skills. You don’t need to have any official qualifications or experience to join this placement – simply an advanced level of French and a passion for helping others learn.

Projects Abroad have partnered with a local university in Cochabamba, which is also one of the largest universities in the country. You will work mainly in the Linguistics Department, and be assigned to a professor who will act as your mentor.

Classes run between the hours of 8am and 8pm, with regular lessons lasting 90 minutes. However, you will not have to work the full day – volunteers tend to work mornings or afternoons, or a mixture of the two, for a total of around 18-20 teaching hours per week. You may also find yourself helping with extra tutorial classes or running workshops. When you arrive, your supervisor will help you set up a schedule that works for you. During the university holidays, we arrange private classes in the Projects Abroad office.

The contents of the classes that you teach should be based on what the professor is teaching in his/her own classes. However, some professors are more flexible with this.

Our Teaching project coordinator in Bolivia organises regular workshops for our volunteers. These workshops will provide you with tools and tips on lesson planning and ideas for different classroom activities. They are also an opportunity for you to get help with any issues you might have, and receive or give feedback.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Bolivia Teaching Management Plan.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
