Volunteer with Projects Abroad on the Non-school Multi-sport Project in Belize and help run a summer sports programme for the local children. In Belize, the San Pedro town council has an entire department dedicated to encouraging youth participation in sports. The goal of the department is to provide the local children with a fun and constructive outlet for their energy during the summer which will discourage juvenile violence and crime.
This four-week summer sports programme is open to every child in the community between the ages of 5 and 12. This is a great way to occupy the children during their free time, encourage them to develop their fitness and have fun with other children. We hope that this will also encourage them to join school sports teams at their schools or help them develop their skills if they are already part of a team.
Your role on the Multi-sports coaching project in Belize
The summer sports programme runs from Monday to Friday, from 17 July 2017 to 11 August 2017. The provisional dates for 2018 are 16 July 2018 – 10 August 2018. Volunteers can join from 1 – 4 weeks.
Every week, coaches and volunteers will focus on a different sport, such as beach football, swimming, martial arts and softball. In the mornings you will use your time to prepare afternoon activities and work with various coaches, who have the necessary experience and training in each of the sports taught. We encourage you to share your knowledge and ideas on how to get as many children as possible involved.
Between 2pm and 4pm, you will assist the coaches as they teach the children how to play the sport. You will help demonstrate how to play the game, encourage the children to take part, make sure they know how to play properly and ensure that they are having fun. The day doesn’t always end with the game. The programme also gets the children involved in a beach clean-up to teach them about the importance of keeping the oceans clean, which you will help organise.
At the end of the four weeks, there will be a ceremony to wrap up the sports programme and to thank all the volunteers, staff and children for participating. This ceremony will also celebrate National Youth Day in Belize and the evening will end off with a movie and snacks in the local park.
While in Belize, you will be living with a local host family. This is a great opportunity for you to learn more about the lifestyle and culture in the country. In your spare time, there is also plenty to do. You can visit the many beautiful beaches, take a trip to the Blue Hole or go zip lining and cave tubing.
If you would like to coach sports in Belize throughout the year and work with students in local schools, you can join our Teach Physical Education Project in Belize.
