Community Sports in Jamaica
Short-term Projects for 16-19 Year Olds
- Placement location: Mandeville
- Types of placement: Community Sports Camp
- Accommodation: Host Families
- Age Requirements: 16-19 years old
Jamaicans are fiercely serious about sport and are very proud of their athletic achievements. So if you love taking part in varied sporting activities this project is for you!
You will help coordinate and run sporting activities with disadvantaged children aged from 6 to 18 years old at a community sports camp. Volunteers will be involved in a number of sports, including football, cricket, netball and athletics. At the end of the two weeks a traditional sports day will be held, where typical Jamaican races will be combined with your ideas for some competitions. Your support will be greatly appreciated whether you have a lot of training in one particular sport, or general enthusiasm for sports in general. Days will be tiring but a lot of fun and you’ll enjoy organised cultural and social events in the evenings.
Volunteers will live with host families to get a real feel for Jamaican life and culture.
At the weekend you will go on a trip to one of the island’s famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food, and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
Every year, thousands of Short-term Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work.
