Anyone considering volunteering in the field of physiotherapy abroad should look at Togo as a place to get valuable work experience. Togo is an extremely poor country and you will experience physiotherapy practices that manage without up-to-date, modern equipment. Togolese people are very welcoming and the staff at your placement will be keen to ensure you have a worthwhile time with them.
Physiotherapy volunteers are placed at ADS, an NGO that is located in a more rural part of Lomé. It serves children who live far from the city hospitals, ensuring they get regular contact and care. Volunteers will have a mainly observational role. You may get given more to do depending on your experience and how well you involve yourself in the team.
Disabilities are often frowned upon and surrounded by stigma in Togo. Your help on the project could help to change these attitudes.
Physiotherapy volunteers are involved in different stages of treatment including rehabilitation. In the past volunteers have visited children in their homes and in schools and have been involved in raising awareness about disabilities.
Do not expect to have access to much equipment. You will need to be creative when volunteering on this programme.
Requirements for Volunteering in Togo
Volunteers on a physiotherapy project in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and children do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working with them.
While volunteering in Togo, you will stay with one of our warm and welcoming local host families. You will be able to meet and socialise with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the local area has to offer with them.
You can join the Physiotherapy project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely on the programme please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
