Volunteering with Projects Abroad on the Pharmacy Project in Sri Lanka is an opportunity for you to find out more about pharmaceutical practices in a developing country and gain practical work experience. While Sri Lankan medical facilities are often of a basic standard, there is a lot that you can learn from observing local pharmacists in clinical settings and participating in outreach programmes.

Your role as a Pharmacy volunteer

A Projects Abroad volunteer Pharmacy outreach in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, you will be placed at a general hospital in the medicine dispatch unit, working under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. They will assist and mentor you throughout your placement.

One of the most important aspects of your project will be the time you spend observing and helping the pharmacists as they dispense medication. You will get involved by assisting the staff with packing medication and, if you are confident with the process, you may do data capturing under their supervision.

Participating in community outreach programmes in Sri Lanka

Throughout your placement, you will join community outreach programmes. Here, you will provide local communities with free basic medical services and prescribed medication under the supervision of a pharmacist. You will also help raise awareness on various healthcare issues by presenting talks and workshops at schools and community centres.

To further your skills and to give you additional insight into the medical field, a local doctor will be holding a monthly seminar, which is open to all Projects Abroad Medicine & Healthcare volunteers.

When you are not busy volunteering, you will have plenty of time to explore your surroundings and socialise with other volunteers. You will also live with a local host family, giving you the chance to immerse yourself completely in Sri Lankan culture.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
