As a Projects Abroad Pharmacy volunteer in Kenya, you have the opportunity to learn more about the challenges public pharmacies face in a developing country. Volunteering on a Pharmacy Project in Kenya

A Projects Abroad Pharmacy volunteer dispenses anti-worm pills to local children in Nanyuki, Kenya

During your project, you will be observing and helping the local staff while working towards improving the healthcare offered to the patients, ensuring the patients receive the correct medication and assisting where there is a need in the pharmacy. This will give you the opportunity to engage with patients from different backgrounds.

You will be guided by an experienced local pharmacist throughout your project, and you will work closely together while learning the ins-and-outs of their job.

Your Role as a Pharmacy Volunteer

Your role will be mainly observational but you will have the opportunity to complete certain tasks under the supervision of local pharmacists, such as preparing medication by reviewing instructions from a physician, dispensing pharmaceuticals, providing pharmacological information by answering questions and counselling patients on drug therapies.

You will also participate in regular weekly and monthly medical outreaches and awareness days. Working and interacting with the local community is a great way to broaden your understanding of the challenges people in outlying areas face. You will also help with the packaging, labelling and dispensing of medication to patients in the area, under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist.

You will live with a local host family, which will help you better understand Kenyan culture. When you are not with your host family, you will be able to spend time with other Projects Abroad volunteers by socialising after work hours and planning weekend trips together.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
