Physiotherapy in the Philippines
High School Specials for 15-18 Year Olds
- Placement Location: San Remigio, Cebu
- Types of Placements: Community rehabilitation centre
- Accommodation: Host family
- Age Requirements: 15-18 years old
As a volunteer on the Physiotherapy High School Special in the Philippines, you will be able to learn more about physiotherapy practices in a developing country. While working at the Persons with Disability Affairs Office (PDAO) in San Remigio, shadow the local physiotherapists as they consult and treat their patients.
Your role is mainly observational and this will expose you to different aspects of physiotherapy treatment right from the start. Join the physiotherapists when they consult with their patients during various home visits and see how a physiotherapist works one-on-one with their patients. At the same time, learn more about the different treatments for specific types of illnesses and conditions.
Every country has different medical procedures and treatment methods so you and your fellow volunteers will attend a workshop about healthcare in the Philippines. This will give you a deeper insight into how healthcare works on the ground around the world.
When you aren’t volunteering, you will have plenty of time to explore the country, specifically Bantayan Island - a hidden gem in Cebu. On the island, you can explore the beauty of a century old church and spend time on white sandy beaches while watching the sunrise over the crystal-clear waters. You will stay with a local host family during your stay, which means that you get to eat authentic Filipino food every day. Take every opportunity to learn more about your host family’s culture and traditions, but most of all, enjoy your adventure.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
