Our Christmas Projects are structured trips which run over the Christmas holiday period. They are open to volunteers of all ages and you will work on the projects as a group with other volunteers from around the world.
This placement is ideal for anyone interested in the field of medicine. It offers you a unique insight into medicine in the developing world. Throughout the two weeks, you'll have the chance to spend time in a medical institution.
Your placement will be based in and around Colombo. Volunteers will be under the supervision of a Projects Abroad Coordinator; and will spend time in the different departments of a general hospital, as well as visit a hospital specialising in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. You may also participate in outreach activities where you will visit a local community.
On arrival you will be briefed on Sri Lanka's medical system and on the Sri Lankan culture. Tips and advice will be given by your coordinators to make sure that you get the most out of the experience.
You will stay in a hostel or with a host family, depending on the number of volunteers joining this project. You will be able to spend Christmas and celebrate the New Year with other volunteers in Sri Lanka.
During the weekend and after work you will get to experience more of the Sri Lankan culture, as Projects Abroad will organise a trip to a palm fringed beach that Sri Lanka is famous for or visit one of the spectacular ancient cities. Leisure activities and shopping will also be organised during the weekend and evenings.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
