Volunteering on a Care project in the Philippines will be a challenging but also rewarding experience. Whether you are on a gap year, holiday from university or coming to development work as an older volunteer on a career break, you will have a role to play and your contribution will be valued.
In the Philippines many thousands of impoverished urban children are growing up in poverty and are often deprived of basic healthcare and education. Rapid growth and urbanisation means that almost half the country's population now live in towns and cities, with the Philippines now being one of the most urbanised countries in Southeast Asia.
The Philippines is also unfortunately still seeing an increase in the HIV infection rate, with one out of three new cases being in a young person.
Children are therefore particularly vulnerable, but by working and interacting with children you can help to improve their future prospects.
Volunteers usually start work about 4 to 5 hours a day. If you live close to your host family you may return home for lunch, otherwise you will be provided with a packed lunch by your host family. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.

Volunteering abroad on a Care Project in Philippines
Over the years, our volunteers have worked with children at orphanages and residential care homes in Philippines. They have done incredible work at these placements, improving living conditions there and creating opportunities for children by supporting their education and care. However, we have decided to move our focus away from orphanages and homes toward community and family-based care. This is because we believe stable family environments are best for the children we work with. Read more about orphanage volunteering and our position on it. This means that instead of volunteering in orphanages in Philippines, volunteers will work in placements like day care centres, kindergartens and schools, or support groups for the elderly and mothers and babies. This will help Projects Abroad build stronger relationships with local communities and – most importantly – help families stay together and flourish.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
