Volunteering on a Care Project in Madagascar with Projects Abroad

A young boy smiles in Madagascar, a destination offered by Projects AbroadAt the Early Childhood Development Centre, which is based in the town of Andasibe, volunteers work with children between the ages of 2 and 6, who come from families that cannot afford to send them to pre-school.

The primary goal of the centre is to improve relatively low literacy and numeracy levels, in order to help them reach a level where they can cope with the rigours of a normal schooling system once they start first grade. Volunteers also coordinate and run educational activities related to teaching better hygienic habits, assist in the development of their English and French, and ultimately provide them with a safe space to learn and have fun.

Suggestions to introduce other activities - such as sports and arts and crafts - are always welcomed as we are open to any ideas you may have to help improve the lives of the children with whom you are working.

However, keep in mind that the project direction changes during the school holiday period from early July towards the end of September. During this time, all Care volunteers help run a summer camp for children between the ages of 6 and 11. The purpose of which is to continue stimulating them during the long break. The camp is also open to children below the age of 6, and if there are younger children attending, volunteers will run Early Childhood Development classes and activities for them.

Your Role as a Care Volunteer in Madagascar

All Care volunteers attend a weekly workshop with a Projects Abroad Coordinator, wherein they discuss lesson plans for the week ahead and the challenges they face, in order to produce solutions together.

Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel and explore. As the centre is fully funded and run by Projects Abroad, and relies entirely on the presence and support of volunteers, the need for volunteers is essential in the maintenance of a space dedicated to children who have no other place to go.

You can join a Care project in Madagascar for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
