Projects Abroad Conservation volunteers spot a bird species in Peru

Volunteer in the heart of the Amazon Rainforest and contribute to ongoing conservation efforts with Projects Abroad in Peru. Based at the Taricaya Ecological Reserve, you’ll get to take part in a wide range of different activities. It’s great way to learn more about conservation initiatives in South America and experience living and working in a rainforest environment.

During your time at Taricaya, you will work alongside other volunteers on tasks such as biodiversity studies and wildlife observation of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and birds. Observation work is done with using motion-sensitive cameras and sighting wildlife from the tallest treetop canopy walkway in South America. Other activities include bird tagging, tracking a group of rehabilitated spider monkeys, assisting with trail maintenance and agricultural work on farm plots.

The rescue centre at Taricaya is a big part of this project and the animals living there require a lot of care. One of your responsibilities at the project is to help with feeding and ensuring that their enclosures are maintained. You will also help build new enclosures if there is a need. A fun aspect of your trip may be the work you do at the mahogany programme. This can be a creative outlet for volunteers since you can do carpentry work with the wood from the reserve’s plantation.

Work schedules will vary depending on what the focus is for that day. Night walks are held regularly and give you a fascinating perspective on the Amazon rainforest. You may also have the opportunity to camp out overnight with staff and volunteers.

All volunteers will live together in shared bungalows. In your free time, you can relax at the lodge or attend weekly talks around specific conservation topics given by our staff. You can also get involved in local football matches that take place on Friday afternoons. Over the weekend, you can join the other volunteers and explore a nearby town or relax at the lodge together.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
