Arrival airport and pickup in Madagascar
On arrival at Ivato International Airport (TNR), you will walk through immigration, collect your luggage, and make your way to the arrivals section of the airport.
As you exit the airport, one of our friendly staff members will be waiting to collect you. They’ll be clearly visible, in a Projects Abroad t-shirt or holding a Projects Abroad sign. Please note that for security reasons, the airport is only accessible to travellers. Our staff members cannot enter the building at all.
After meeting a member of our staff, you’ll have the chance to exchange money and buy a local SIM card.
From the airport, you will be taken to your host family in Andasibe, where staff will make sure you’re settled. The drive between the airport and the town where you’ll live is around four hours, depending on traffic. We cover the cost of your transport to and from your arrival airport, giving you one less thing to worry about when you arrive after a long journey.

Visas requirements for your volunteer project or internship in Madagascar
One of the perks of volunteering with us is the visa guidance we give you. We have a dedicated visa team who have up-to-date information on visa requirements for all of our destinations around the world. You can get in touch with us if you have any visa queries, big or small, and we will talk you through the process. Once you apply, you’ll also get a link to your own MyProjectsAbroad webpage, which will include all the necessary visa information.
Your induction and orientation in Madagascar
Depending on the time of your arrival in Madagascar’s capital, Antananarivo, you will either have your induction on the same day as your arrival or on the following day. However, if you arrive over the weekend, you will have your induction on the Monday morning.
On the day of your induction, your Projects Abroad Coordinator will pick you up from your host family in Andasibe, where we’re based. You’ll get to see the surrounding area, including major landmarks and amenities, such as:
- The post office
- Internet cafes
- The exchange bureau
If you didn’t have a chance to purchase a SIM card or phone on arrival, you’ll be able to do this as part of your induction. During your induction, you’ll also receive an induction pack. This contains all the information you need, like a map of Andasibe with important places highlighted, and contact information for local Projects Abroad staff.
Your coordinator will show you how to use public transport and will explain the best route to and from your placement. You’ll also get to hear more about how we run our projects in Madagascar and see our local offices.
Your first day at your volunteer or internship placement in Madagascar
Your first day at your placement is all about getting a feel for the kind of work we do and what your role on the project will be. The project work won’t begin right away. You’ll start by meeting your new colleagues, hearing about our overall mission, and getting to know your way around the placement. No matter which project in Madagascar you’re doing, we’ll be there to guide you and support you through your work.
You’ll start working at your project on your second day.

Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement.
