Building in Jamaica

Volunteers on the Building High School Special project will assist in the construction of ventilated improved pit toilets for disadvantaged locals, who do not have basic toilet facilities in their area.

Volunteers will also be involved in the renovation of houses for the elderly and disadvantaged people whose homes are in deplorable conditions. This might include roof and ceiling repairs, replacement of doors, painting, cleaning and other minor renovation work.

In addition volunteers will participate in at least one building outreach activity, which will also involve minor repairs and painting, to improve conditions in a disadvantaged community.

At the weekend, volunteers will go on a trip to one of the island's famous beaches or caves. This will be coupled with a rich immersion into the music, dance, food and other cultural aspects for which Jamaica is known.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2016 High School Specials Impact Report.
