Italy Arrival Procedure
ARRIVAL AIRPORT: Reggio Calabria airport (REG)
On arrival in at Reggio Calabria airport, you will be collected by a clearly visible Projects Abroad staff member and taken to your accommodation. The staff member will help you settle in and introduce you to other volunteers staying in the same location.
Depending on traffic, the travel time from the airport to your accommodation will be about a 30-minute drive. Very late or early arrivals will be collected from the airport by our clearly marked staff members and taken to a hotel for the night. You will be taken to your accommodation the following day.
Volunteering in Italy: Induction and Orientation
When you arrive in Italy, you will either have your induction the same day as your arrival or the following day. You will be picked up from your accommodation and taken for an orientation around town, including different landmarks and amenities such as the post office, banks, an internet café and bureaux de change. You can also buy a local SIM card or phone.
You will also have the opportunity to meet the other volunteers and you’ll be shown where to catch a bus or taxi and how to locate our office. The handbook and any necessary safety and security measures will be explained to you on this day too.
If volunteers arrive over the weekend they will have their induction on the Monday morning, because banks and the post office are closed all weekend and the exchange bureaus are closed on Saturday afternoon and Sunday.
You will have exciting travel opportunities during your time in Italy. Over a weekend, take a ferry to Sicily and climb Mount Etna - the tallest active volcano in Europe, or explore Calabria’s beautiful sand beach, go scuba diving, sailing, fishing and trekking. This is also a great opportunity to meet locals, mingle with other volunteers from around the world and learn more about your destination during your stay.
