Equine Therapy & Community in Bolivia
High School Specials for 15-18 Year Olds
- Placement location: Cochabamba
- Types of placements: Equine therapy centre
- Accommodation: Hotel or host family
- Age Requirements: 15-18 years old
This project is a wonderful option for volunteers who love horses and enjoy working with children. You will be placed with a host family or accommodated in a hotel in Cochabamba, and spend your working hours at the Tunari Equestrian Centre. The organisation is both understaffed and under resourced, and will benefit greatly from your help.
There are currently close to 60 disabled children attending equine therapy at the centre. There are also around 100 children who are learning to ride horses. Volunteers are needed to help the children improve their motor and cognitive skills, which in turn will speed up their rehabilitation. Activities include assisting in the equine therapy classes, organising parties for the children at the centre, and riding the horses to keep them trained.
You will also spend time improving the facilities at the centre. This will involve building horse fences, repairing some of the stable roofs and building stable floors.
As a volunteer, you will be required to work up to eight hours a day, but on the weekend you’ll have the opportunity to travel to sights such as Lake Titicaca, Sun Island and the Tiwanaku ruins.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2017 High School Specials Impact Report.
On Wednesday 21st February, Projects Abroad’s Rebecca Walton will be giving an online presentation about our High School Special Projects. You can watch Rebecca's presentation and ask questions from the comfort of your own home. Register for this webinar.
