Projects Abroad Human rights volunteer and project supervisor discuss the environmental education campaign carried out with a girls’ home in Cordoba

If you are passionate about human rights, have an interest in Spanish, and plan to pursue human rights work or law in the future, this project is perfect for you!

You’ll learn about the history and culture of Argentina and get involved in human rights issues at a grass roots level with the guidance of local social workers and our in-house lawyer. By working alongside people living in poor communities in Cordoba, you’ll gain a first-hand understanding of their daily lives and hurdles related to poverty, crime and xenophobia which must be overcome.

Volunteers help work with and learn how to support victims of human rights abuse or individuals in at-risk communities. Tasks may include educating disadvantaged children about social equality, working on a project advocating for homeless people, making young prisoners aware of their basic rights and conducting research on human rights cases.

Volunteers also receive daily Spanish lessons and will live with host families in Cordoba.

At the weekend volunteers usually visit some traditional villages in the hills. There may also be an opportunity to visit the house which once belonged to the famous Argentine socialist revolutionary, Che Guevara.

Volunteers who are taking part in the 4 week option will get involved in a visual campaign which will involve speaking to various local people about the issues at hand.  They will also visit the detention centre in La Perla and may have the opportunity to visit Dinosaurio Mall and La Cumbrecita on the weekend.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work. If you want to know more about their achievements, read our 2016 High School Specials Impact Report.
