What will I do on this project?

On this project, you’ll take part in a wide range of activities that benefit the local children. These include:

  • Assisting teachers in the classroom and supporting their work
  • Taking part in community work and renovations, like beach clean-ups
  • Experiencing the local culture with teenagers your age

Your work will focus on the following areas:

Assisting teachers in the classroom

You’ll be a source of extra support for local teachers, ensuring they can spend time giving students the attention that they need. Organising fun, creative activities is a great way to keep the children occupied while helping them learn through play. You’ll also focus on teaching life skills, giving presentations on topics such as climate change, tuberculosis prevention, and bullying.

Taking part in community work

On this project, you’ll work your fellow volunteers to improve the physical condition of the school. This will include clean-ups and light renovation work. In the towns where you’ll work, the beaches are often covered in litter and there is no proper waste management. You’ll take part in community-wide clean-ups to help address this problem.

Experiencing the local culture

Of course, it’s not all work and no play. You’ll work alongside volunteers from all around the world, making new friends and memories. We organise a range of activities during your leisure time so you can experience the local culture. These include a weekend trip to Sante Fe, and evening events such as game nights or dance classes. You will be supervised by local staff at all times during these trips and events.

Where in Philippines will I work?

Bogo City

Bogo may be a relatively small city, but it’s got everything you need to live comfortably, including shopping centres, ATMs, and restaurants. It’s also got a few impressive heritage sites that are definitely worth seeing while there. Your welcoming host family will be living in this city as well.

San Remigio

Home to Cebu’s longest coastline and clear, cobalt blue waters, it’s any ocean-lover’s destination. Immerse yourself in this little slice of paradise over weekends and when you're socialising with your group.

Cebu Island is known for its beautiful beaches, historical monuments, and exciting activities such as diving, trekking, and island hopping.

Airport pickup, flights and visas

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Philippines Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims and impact of this project?

The aim of this project is provide extra support for children and teachers in schools that are often overcrowded.

With a large number of students in the classroom, it is difficult for teachers to provide all the children with the attention that they need. As a volunteer, you’ll provide an extra pair of helping hands. This makes it easier for teachers to run the classes, and children receive an improved level of educational support. Learning through play is a great way for children to develop their skills.

Teenage volunteer community work in the Philippines also includes working with your fellow volunteers to help improve the physical condition of the school, making it a more pleasant place to learn. This may include cleaning up and taking part in light maintenance work.

Finally, it’s also important to teach children about things that impact their daily lives. You’ll give presentations on a wide range of topics, such as hygiene, bullying, and tuberculosis prevention. This equips children with the knowledge they need to make informed choices.

Management plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring our impact

Every year, thousands of High School Special volunteers and interns actively make a difference around the world. During their time abroad, they contribute towards achieving long-term goals and make a long-lasting positive impact on the communities where they work.

We produce an annual High School Specials Impact Report, which documents some of these achievements. Find out more about the impact of these projects, and read the latest report.

Food and accommodation

You'll stay with a host family in Bogo City. They will welcome you into their home, eager to share their customs and have you teach them about your own culture. We believe that this is the best way to immerse yourself in the culture of the Philippines and have a truly unique experience.

On our High School Specials, we will always try to have you share a room with at least one volunteer or intern of the same sex and approximate age. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fee includes three meals a day.
