Service Learning Trip to Cambodia for Middle School Students

Join us in Cambodia and get an introduction to volunteer work by supporting local communities with a group aged 12-15

Travel to Asia with a group aged 12-15 and Projects Abroad staff at your side on our service learning trip to Cambodia for middle school students. We’ll focus on helping you learn by doing, and we’ll introduce you to the local culture, traditions, and language. This is a great introduction to volunteer work, and a safe way to travel with adult supervision.

You’ll participate in various activities, and work with local teachers at a kindergarten. You’ll help young children learn new English words, and encourage them to practice speaking English with you. You'll also do practical service work. This involves community clean-ups and light renovation work like painting.

You’ll live and work in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital, and stay in a hotel with your group and supervisors. When you’re not learning about service work, we’ve planned activities like a tour of Buddhist temples and the Royal Palace. Over the weekend, we’ll take you on an exciting trip to Siem Reap. Projects Abroad supervise your trip, so you’ll have constant support and guidance.

When you apply you only pay £195, which comes off the total price.

Is service learning in Cambodia for middle school students right for me?

Our group service learning trip to Cambodia is a great fit for you if you want to experience Asia and learn about volunteering by participating in it. Our staff have designed it specifically to introduce students aged 12-15 to travelling and volunteering. It combines travel, learning, and community service in one trip, under the constant supervision and guidance of experienced Projects Abroad staff.

This is also an opportunity to start developing important personal skills, like teamwork and planning, and learning about the importance of helping others. You’ll also learn about a different country, and its traditions and culture, by actually being there.

Our Middle School Special in Cambodia runs over fixed dates during the year, for two weeks at a time. Everything is organised for you, and every activity is supervised. Projects Abroad staff will always be at your side. If you feel homesick, or fall ill, we will be there for you!

What will I do on a Service Learning Trip to Cambodia for middle school students?

You will work with children at a kindergarten, help with basic renovation work, and take part in environmental clean-ups, all under the supervision of Projects Abroad staff. Here are some of the tasks you can expect to do:

  • Encourage young children to speak English and teach them new words
  • Assist with basic renovation tasks such as gardening and painting
  • Take part in community clean-ups and encourage locals to protect the environment
  • Learn about Cambodian culture, traditions, and language in a cultural workshop
  • Visit local attractions and go on trips with your group and our staff

Experiential learning tasks and activities in Cambodia for middle school students can be broken up into three main categories:

Assist at a kindergarten

You will spend a lot of your time playing with children, helping with educational activities and encouraging them to speak English with you. You can also teach them new English words, and sing songs to get them talking.

Through this work with children, you’ll also get the opportunity to learn. Our staff will help you reflect on your experiences, work with you through any problems you encounter, and talk about the results of your work. This will allow you to grow and develop yourself.

We’ll also get you involved with basic maintenance work at the kindergarten. This could be something like painting a classroom or planting a garden.

Participate in community clean ups

In Cambodia, you’ll also take part in a number of environmental clean-ups. During these clean-ups, you can help us share knowledge about how important it is to protect the environment.

Explore and experience Cambodia

Learning about the local culture and traditions is a big part of this programme. We’ll run a workshop where you teach you some of the local language, Khmer. Your family and friends back home will be impressed with your new skills!

You will also get the opportunity to explore Phnom Penh by visiting local markets and attractions and going on a few tours of the surrounding sites with our staff. The best part is that you’ll be able to experience all of this alongside new friends from all over the world.

Where will I be working?

Phnom Penh

You’ll live in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city. It’s a vibrant city located on the banks of the Mekong river, and it’s also where our Projects Abroad Cambodia offices are based.

You’ll work with your group and our staff at a kindergarten. The areas we work in are disadvantaged, and the kindergarten won’t have the equipment you’re used to at home.

After each jam-packed day, you’ll return to a hotel where you will be staying with your group and Projects Abroad staff.

AIRPORT PICKUP, FLIGHTS AND VISAS

When you arrive at your respective airport, a member of Projects Abroad staff will be there to meet you. You can find more detailed information on arrival airports, orientation, and visas on our Cambodia Arrival Procedures page.

What are the aims and impact of Experiential Learning in Cambodia for Middle School Students?

The aim of this project is to introduce students aged 12-15 like you to volunteering through a safe, fun, and educational experience. We focus on service learning and experiential education, and teach you about how you can help others.

In Cambodia, you’ll live with the local community and you’ll learn by doing. You’ll become part of our ongoing efforts to support the people here, especially young children. You’ll get an insight into the problems people struggle with everyday, and learn about how you can help. You’ll also learn more about human impact on the environment.

Our staff will support and guide you throughout the project. By reflecting on your experiences, working with you through problems and talking about the results of your work, our staff will help you grow and develop as well. You’ll also learn about cultural exchange, and experience it by working directly with local people.

Join us in Cambodia on our Childcare & Community Work Middle School Special and experience life in Asia with a group your age, while you learn about service.

Management Plans

We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.

Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.

Measuring Our Impact

Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.

Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.

FOOD AND ACCOMMODATION

You'll stay in a hotel with other Projects Abroad volunteers during your stay in Phnom Penh. This is a great way to get to know your fellow volunteers, share experiences, and explore your surroundings in your free together.

On our Middle School Specials, we will always try to have you share a room with at least one volunteer of the same sex and approximate age. Your room will be modest, but comfortable, clean, and safe.

Your programme fees include three meals a day.
