Is this trip to Kenya right for me?
Our Discovery Trips are perfect for travellers looking for an immersive and action packed itinerary. You’ll spend a week travelling around Kenya, exploring and discovering the beauty of Kenyan parks. You’ll discover the rich tribal history and traditions, breathtaking views and abundant wildlife. You’ll get all this in one intense and exciting week, full of authentic African experiences.
This trip is open to travellers over 18 but a decent level of fitness is required due to a hike being included on the itinerary.
While in Kenya, you’ll live with a local host family who will introduce you to life in Kenya first-hand. Use this opportunity to interact with your host family, ask questions and learn a few skills. You’ll go home having learned a few Swahili phrases or know exactly how much spice to add for that delicious Kenyan dish. You’ll travel to and from activities in a private vehicle to make your trip more comfortable.
Day 1 – Arrival in Nanyuki
The day you land in Nanyuki may be an overwhelming one but our staff will be there to guide you through. They’ll collect you from the airport and drive you to your host family where you’ll live with the rest of your group. Your host family will welcome you as one of their own (and the food is something to write home about!).
After you have settled in, your group will be taken on a tour of Nanyuki. You’ll be shown all the important spots like supermarkets and ATMs. To finish off the day, you’ll attend a Swahili language lesson where you’ll learn a few basic words and phrases in the local language.
Day 2 – Mau Mau Caves and traditional dance lesson
Take a trip into Kenyan history as you tour the Mau Mau caves in the Mount Kenya National Park. These caves were made famous by Kenya Freedom Fighters who used them as a hide-out during the Mau Mau Uprising between 1952 - 1960.
In the evening, you’ll need to put on your dancing shoes after dinner. A local dancer will show you the ways of traditional Kenyan dance. This is the perfect chance to test your African rhythm.
Day 3 – Cooking class
Get ready to fill those bellies with some of the most delicious food in Kenya. You’ll start your day shopping for ingredients at a local market before learning how to combine them into the perfect dish that will leave you drooling for more. But your cooking lessons don’t stop there. You’ll finish off the day at the crafts centre where you’ll learn how to make traditional bread. Yum!
Day 4 – Hike in Mount Kenya National Park
It’s all about the outdoors today as you depart for Mount Kenya National Park. You’ll spend the day hiking in the park and learning about the various plants and animals you see. You’ll do all this under the backdrop of the stunning Mount Kenya, the highest mountain in Kenya and the second-highest in Africa
Day 5 – Samburu Village and game drive
Spend the day exploring and talking to the locals from a traditional village in Kenya. You’ll learn all about their fascinating pastoralist culture, how they live and why.
You’ll finish off the day by going on a game drive inside the Samburu National Park. Try and spot as many of the Big 5 as you can. You might even get a glimpse of the endangered Rothschild giraffe.
Day 6 – Nairobi
Travel to Nairobi and learn more about the history of the country. You’ll visit the Nairobi City Museum, the Parliament Building and bus station. If you didn’t get to see giraffes on our game drive the day before, you’ll be sure to catch a glimpse at the Giraffe Centre in Nairobi. They protect endangered giraffes and help conserve their habitats.
Finish off the day with a tour through the Bomas of Kenya Cultural Centre, a touristic village in the heart of the capital. Bomas displays traditional villages belonging to the several Kenyan tribes so you’re in for a real cultural and historical treat.
Day 7 – Departure from Nanyuki
Use your last day to prepare for your departure, say your goodbyes and recap stories with your group. It was a week of incredible experiences and memories that will last long after you’ve headed back home
