Team up with like-minded people and volunteer with children in Cambodia as a group. You’ll work together to support local teachers and caregivers at a daycare centre, and focus on early childhood development. You’ll also help improve the children’s learning environments. This is a great way to give back and travel with others at the same time.
The daycare centres we work with need extra pairs of helping hands to give each child more attention. Your group will help by doing educational activities and games that teach basic skills. You’ll improve the learning environment through activities like painting a mural of the alphabet.
You’ll live and work with your group in Phnom Penh, and stay in a guesthouse or hotel. When you’re not working, we’ve organised cultural and social events for you to enjoy, along with an exciting weekend trip. Throughout it all, Projects Abroad staff will be by your side.
Please note this calculator is for pricing information only. You will need to choose your final dates and duration on our application form.
When you apply you only pay £195, which comes off the total price.

What will I be doing?
Your main role will be to work with your group to support children at a care centre. You’ll also get involved with light renovation work. You’ll get involved with activities such as:
- Support local staff at the daycare centres and encourage early childhood development
- Do light renovation work like painting or building a vegetable garden in the community
- Explore attractions and experience living in Phnom Penh with your group
Here are some of the things you will do during this project:
Support staff at daycare centres
In Cambodia, we partner with a local NGO, Khemara, to run daycare centres for children. Most of the children come from disadvantaged families, where both parents have to work during the day. With your group, you’ll work with teachers to make sure kids learn the skills they need. The skills they learn in their early years will help them cope when they start formal schooling. You can do this through:
- Planning and running educational and creative activities, like arts and crafts
- Playing fun games that teach a skill, like playing English Bingo to learn basic vocabulary
- Going outside to play a ball game to improve hand-eye coordination
You’ll also help make sure that the children practice good hygiene everyday. This could be something as simple as ensuring that each child washes their hands before eating.
Do light renovation work in the community
A big part of our work to support education in Cambodia involves improving learning environments. The community volunteer work you do as a group in Cambodia depends on the centre’s needs at the time. So, you could find yourself:
- Painting a mural in a classroom
- Building playground equipment
- Planting a vegetable garden.
This is a wonderful way to give back as a group. In the short time you’re in Cambodia together, you’ll be able to accomplish a lot and create something that will benefit your placement for years to come.
Explore Phnom Penh
Along with giving back to the community, we also want to give you time to relax and have fun! When you’re not working, you can look forward to cultural and social activities in the evenings, like a night bus tour and traditional puppet show. Over the weekend, we’ll take you and your group to Siem Reap. During all of these activities, Projects Abroad staff will be close at hand, in case you need us.
Our Project Partners in Cambodia
We’ve partnered with the Khemara Organisation and other non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in Cambodia. All of our work with children is built around community-based care. We do not work with children in orphanages. Instead, we focus on programmes that allows the children to remain with their families.
Khemara is a well-established local NGO that aims to improve the quality of life for Cambodian women and children. The NGO has set up kindergartens, schools, and care centres in disadvantaged communities for the children who have been subject to poverty and abuse. Here, they have a safe place to learn and grow.
Where in Cambodia will I be working?
Your group will work at a daycare centre for children in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. The care centres we work with are in rural areas, where most families are severely disadvantaged. Most importantly, these centres give children a safe space to learn and grow during the day. In turn, this gives their parents the opportunity to seek full-time employment, so they can support their families.
When you’re not volunteering, you’ll explore Cambodia with your group and Projects Abroad staff at your side. Each night, you will return to a guesthouse or hotel with your group.
We set out the aims and objectives of our projects in documents called Management Plans. We use them to properly plan the work you’ll do. They also help us measure and evaluate our achievements and impact each year.
Ultimately, our Management Plans help us make our projects better. This in turn means you get to be part of something that makes a real impact where it’s needed. Read more about our Management Plans.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
