Is a Business internship in Vietnam right for me?
Our Business placements in Vietnam are perfect for you, if you want an internship that’s out of the ordinary and you’re proactive and independent.
You’ll work with an organisation that empowers disadvantaged youth through vocational training. It’s an excellent way to put your studies into practice and enhance your CV, while making a positive impact in a local community. And it’s certainly an experience that is worlds apart from the usual 9-5 office environment!
To join, you need intermediate English skills, which means you should be comfortable speaking, reading, and writing English. You also need to be at least 18 years old or over. You will also need to have a background in at least one of these areas:
- Sales and marketing
- Teaching IT
- Web and graphic design
- Social media
- Mass media coordinating (such as newsletters and press releases, for example)
- Taking photographs and creating video clips
This internship is available from four weeks, and it runs year-round. Our start and end dates are flexible, so you can choose a time that suits you.
What will I do on this Business placement in Vietnam?
On this internship, you will take part in a range of different tasks depending on your background and experience. Our partner organisation runs two different social enterprises that you can work with, namely a hair salon and a food delivery service. You can get involved in:
- Provide training to the young people at these enterprises
- Work on communications with current and potential customers
- Help to promote and market the social enterprises
- Assist with fundraising efforts for the organisation
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Provide training to the youth at these enterprises
There is plenty of room for you to share your skills with the young people who are working at the businesses. Help them with their conversational English abilities, with a special focus on the phrases they will need for customer service. You can also show them how to make use of social media and photo or video-making applications for marketing purposes.
Work on communications with current and potential customers
As part of your work, you will spend time replying to foreign customers’ queries and processing their orders. You will also update and improve the current websites for both social enterprises, and use their social media platforms to spread the word.
Help to promote and market the social enterprises
You will help to promote the work of these social enterprises, assisting with different marketing campaigns. You will also reach out to potential clients by targeting expat groups and embassies. You’ll get to visit these organisations as a representative of the placement, which is an exciting networking opportunity.
Assist with fundraising efforts for the organisation
Our partner organisation does tremendous work to empower disadvantaged youth across the country. Fundraising is incredibly important, ensuring they can continue their mission. You’ll assist by writing proposals and searching for alternative sources of funding.
Where in Vietnam will I work?
You’ll gain business work experience in Vietnam’s vibrant capital of Hanoi. It’s one of the fastest growing cities in the world, with a rich cultural heritage. Collect some unique souvenirs while browsing the streets of the Old Quarter, and sample some varieties of the national dish pho from a roadside stall. You can also spend some time at one of Hanoi’s many historic monuments and museums, or simply relax on the banks of the Hoan Kiem Lake.
During your working hours, you’ll be based at the premises of one of the businesses.
A typical day on the Business internship in Vietnam
After enjoying breakfast at your host family or shared volunteer accommodation, it’s time to head to work. You’ll travel there via taxi or motorbike taxi. On your first day, a Projects Abroad staff member will accompany you to show you the way.
A typical day on this internship runs from 8am - 5pm, Monday to Friday. You will have your evenings and weekends free to travel or socialise.
Your specific daily tasks will vary according to your background and the current needs of the placement. You may find yourself working on marketing, communications, finance, or training. This can involve replying to customer queries, writing a fundraising proposal, or researching potential new clients. There is also an opportunity to teach conversational English lessons to the youth who work at the social enterprises.
Once you’re done for the day, it’s time to soak in the city life of busy Hanoi. Check out some of the local sights, or take part in our regular socials where you can get to know your fellow interns and volunteers.
What are the aims and impact of this project?
There are two main aims of this project: to provide you with a practical, educational internship, and to help grow social enterprises which benefit disadvantaged youth.
Many of the interns who join us are looking for real-world experience in their chosen fields of study. We work to facilitate cross-cultural exchange, allowing people from different backgrounds to share knowledge and ideas. You will learn from local professionals, gain new skills, and enhance your CV.
On our Business placement in Vietnam, you will work with an organisation that provides free vocational training to vulnerable youth. Our partner NGO works with young people ranging in age from 16 to 25, many of whom have been affected by poverty, human trafficking, or HIV/AIDS. They run two businesses which bring in funding for their continued work, and give young people a place to hone their skills.
You’ll work to promote the social enterprises to their target market, and raise awareness about the organisation and their service offerings. Our partner organisation does not have enough human resources, so you will play a substantial role in helping them to grow their businesses. This in turn will enable them to educate and empower even more youth across the country.
Measuring Our Impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
I focused mainly on coming up with innovative new ways of promoting the company. I set up and managed new social media channels and wrote and created various posters and videos in English to help their products reach a wider audience.
