What will I do at my Business placement in China?
As a Business intern in China, you will work at a local company and:
- Shadow and learn from business professionals to expand your knowledge
- Assist the company with market and competitor research to ensure targeted business efforts
- Get involved in group meetings with clients and staff to share knowledge and ideas
Your work will focus on the following areas:
Shadow and learn from business professionals
As an intern, you’ll begin by observing. You’ll work alongside the local staff and we encourage you to ask questions and learn the ins and outs of the company. The staff will be more inclined to teach you if you show an interest and enthusiasm for the work they do. You’ll be trusted with more work as you prove yourself.
Assist the company with market and competitor research
Knowing your audience is the key to a successful business. By delving into the depths of marketing research, you’ll learn more about the company and its consumers’ needs and preferences. By analysing this, you can implement the best business practices for targeting their audience. You’ll spend time analysing the strengths and weaknesses of competitors. You’ll learn where marketing strategies can be improved, which opportunities make for good business decisions and how to run a business.
Get involved in group meetings with clients and staff
You’ll often get to sit in on meetings, either with staff or clients. You’ll get involved in these meetings and help brainstorm with the local staff. Don’t be shy to give your opinion regarding the topic at hand and exchange ideas or solutions where appropriate. It will help you build confidence as a professional.
Where in China will I work?
As the largest and most developed metropolis in mainland China, it comes as no surprise that Shanghai is a hub for international business. There’s always something going in Shanghai, both day and night. You can meet other locals and expats working in the business world. You may even socialise with them during your free time and build your network of international contacts. As an intern, you can work in the following areas:

Measuring our impact
Our projects work towards clear long-term goals, with specific annual objectives. Every volunteer and intern we send to these projects helps us work towards these goals, no matter how long they spend on our projects.
Every year we take a step back and look at how much progress we've made towards these goals. We put together a Global Impact Report, which documents our achievements. Find out more about the impact our global community of volunteers, interns and staff make, and read the latest report.
Leisure activities and free time
China is a vast country so it’s no surprise that it offers a wide variety of different tourist activities. While you’re volunteering, there will be plenty for you to do in the evenings and over the weekends.
What’s extraordinary about China is the contrasts of ancient and modern, rural and urban. You’ll find gleaming skyscrapers, like the Oriental Pearl Tower, only a short distance from the tranquil Yuyuan Garden.
There’s plenty to explore in the city, but it’s also worth taking a trip to the countryside. There you can trek along the breathtaking silk route or visit a Buddhist monastery.
A trip to China wouldn’t be complete without touring the country’s many natural wonders and World Heritage Sites. This includes the Great Wall of China, the Yangtze River, and the Terracotta Army.
With plenty of other volunteers in China, you’ll have the opportunity to travel with others and explore as a group. Or, if you prefer, you’re welcome to do your sightseeing independently.
Safety and staff support
Your safety and security is our prime concern. We have many procedures and systems to ensure you have the support you need to enjoy your trip with peace of mind. Our Projects Abroad staff are available 24 hours a day to help, and will be on-hand to make sure you settle in well at your accommodation and placement. If you encounter any problems, they will be available to help at any time.
