Mongolia: Volunteer Veterinary Medicine Work-Experience Placements

Veterinary Medicine in Mongolia

Mongolia is a vast country with desert, grassy steppes and mountains. Living amongst these landscapes is a wide array of animals. The welfare of domestic animals is an essential part of rural development and this is where you can help out as a veterinary volunteer in Mongolia.

Whether you are a pre-university student considering a career in veterinary medicine, an undergraduate or a graduate, working as a veterinary volunteer you could get involved in vaccinations, operations, laboratory work, post-mortems, inspections and the routine treatment of domestic animals and pets.

Veterinary volunteers work at a busy veterinary practice on the outskirts of Ulaanbaatar. The clinics treat all kinds of pets and animals such as dogs, cats, turtles, birds and small mammals. You will work alongside the local veterinary staff and have the opportunity to assist them with basic treatments, observe surgery and gain experience of diseases rarely seen in the West.

If you have a particular interest in horses there is also the chance to spend some of your veterinary placement outside of the city. Here horses are essential and the entire way of life or many people in these areas is dependent upon the horses they own. You will stay with a horseman and his family and help with their daily tasks, such a herding livestock and making food and drink from mare's milk.

Our voluntary Veterinary placements in Mongolia will give you access to invaluable work experience and increase your prospects within this highly competitive field. Show initiative and a willingness to get involved and you will have a thoroughly rewarding experience.

Volunteering on a Veterinary Placement in Mongolia with Projects Abroad

Working in a veterinary surgery in Mongolia

As a volunteer in Mongolia on one of our Veterinary placements, you can provide effective and practical help working on a variety of tasks. When you arrive at work on your first day, you will be assigned a supervisor who will be able to advise and support you during your placement, and of course the members of our Projects Abroad office are always on hand to help.

Your work will predominantly involve observing and assisting with operations, treating diseases, and giving vaccinations. You will learn how to handle all types of different animals from livestock to domestic animals.

Whichever voluntary placement you are working on, your input will be greatly encouraged and appreciated. The vets are keen to get you as involved as possible, and will enjoy teaching you about veterinary practice in their country.

Experiences on Voluntary Veterinary Placements in Mongolia

"I was there to see veterinary practice 'with a difference'. Based in a basement clinic in Ulaanbaatar, I was to travel with the vets out to rural visits, to help treat dogs in the city, to stay with nomads and experience the life of a herding community first hand, and to visit the famous Przewalski's horses."
