Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care

The Animal Care project in Jamaica is a practical placement for anyone who wants to work with animals. Whether you are a pre-university student applying for a place studying Veterinary Medicine at university, an undergraduate, a qualified vet, or simply a passionate animal lover, you can get involved in our Animal Care project in Jamaica.

Volunteers on this project work at an animal rescue and rehabilitation centre in Lydford, St. Anne, which is just outside of Ocho Rios. This animal centre has been in operation for nearly ten years, rescuing and sheltering stray, injured, neglected and abandoned animals. There are currently over 200 rescued animals at the centre and volunteers will provide them with treatment and care.

The educational aspect of the project involves raising awareness in schools to educate children about the importance of caring properly for animals and providing information on how to report cases of abuse, neglect and cruelty. Teaching children from a young age about the value and responsibility of animal ownership is a vital part of improving the situation in the future.

Volunteering on an Animal Care Placement in Jamaica

Volunteers are able to help in three main areas:

  • General treatment and care of the animals
  • Assist with examinations of animals
  • Educational programmes

General treatment and care of the animals

Veterinary Medicine & Animal Care

All volunteers are needed to provide general care to the animals at the clinic and to stray animals. You will assist with feeding the dogs and cats and cleaning the cages. Some of the animals may arrive at the clinic after being abandoned, neglected or abused, so you may see some shocking cases.

Volunteers without any training or experience will participate in basic treatment including ear cleaning, cleaning or cutting nails and grooming the animals. They will also be allowed to observe complex procedures and will work with qualified staff.

It is important to note that the local vet only comes to the placement once a week for a few hours. However, there are always other qualified staff on duty.

You can join the Animal Care project in Jamaica for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
