Professional Nutrition Project in Samoa
Samoa has one of the highest obesity rates in the world, putting many Samoans at risk of developing cardiovascular disease, diabetes and other illnesses associated with a poor diet. Projects Abroad’s Nutrition programme aims to support the local community in making healthy lifestyle decisions; and as a PRO volunteer, you can help facilitate a positive change in attitudes towards food and exercise. In turn you will be helping to reduce the number of preventable illnesses associated with poor nutrition.
Here you will find answers to the following questions:
How can a volunteer Dietician/Nutritionist help in Samoa?
Projects Abroad will tailor-make a programme designed to target areas of need based on your experience and qualifications.
You will work in cooperation with the Ministry of Health who coordinate community outreach programmes in and around the city of Apia. As a PRO Nutritionist you will also spend your time at schools, educating and advising teachers, students and parents on ways in which they can improve their health by adopting healthier eating habits. During these community group sessions you will give advice on meal planning, exercise plans or even creating vegetable gardens.
What will I gain from this project?
Whilst working in a school or communities in Samoa, you will gain a broader understanding of the health threats faced by people in Samoa, compared to your home country. You will also benefit from discussions with fellow professionals and have the opportunity to share your expertise. Locals will be keen to hear about your life back home, your family and your friends. We believe that this cultural exchange helps our volunteers gain a new perspective on life.
What will Projects Abroad PRO provide?
We have over 20 years’ experience of running volunteer projects. We provide you with the following support to make sure your time in Samoa is successful and enjoyable:
- Safe accommodation with a Samoan family close to your project.
- Friendly and dedicated local staff available to help 24 hours a day.
- A member of staff to meet you at the airport when you arrive.
- Medical and travel insurance.
