Volunteer Nursing Projects in Nepal

You will be based in hospitals and centres in and around either Kathmandu or Chitwan. Your role will be observational, but you will learn a lot as you will be exposed to many conditions and diseases you would not normally see at home.

Hospital departments you could be placed in include general health services, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, dental services, ENT, x-ray, ultrasound and neurology. You could volunteer at a placement dedicated to the field of trauma, orthopaedics or rehabilitation. You may be based at a leading centre for functional mobility of physically disabled children. Projects Abroad will help match you to a placement that will best suit you.

While on your placement you may come into contact with many easily preventable diseases and illnesses, many of which originate from malnutrition.

Volunteers will also have the opportunity to attend monthly lectures or workshops.

Your Role in Nepal

Nurses tend to deal only with direct treatment of the patients in Nepal, so you will shadow nurses, observing them, and helping where you can. You will find that you won’t be involved in basic care of patients as their families tend to take on this role.

You may have the chance to spend time on one of our organised outreach projects.

Outreach projects are organised by the hospital we work with on a monthly and bi-monthly basis outside of the rainy season (June to September). The outreach projects offer free health checks and basic medication to suburban or remote communities.

Volunteers working in Chitwan may have the opportunity to visit local schools to lead health and hygiene classes.

We have many placements available in Nepal and if you have an area you wish to specialise in, we can help by arranging your placement accordingly. To volunteer as a nurse in Nepal, you must be able to speak intermediate level English as a minimum.

While you are in Nepal with Projects Abroad, you will live with a local host family or in a hostel. Our volunteer community is also at hand for you to spend time with during your time off. The areas around Chitwan are fantastic for hiking or cycling, and you can take part in a number of adventure sports.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Nepal Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

You can join the Nursing project in Nepal for one, two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.

If you have qualifications or experience in this field then we can make use of your skills. Read more about the opportunities for skilled volunteers in Nepal.
