We have nursing placements for volunteers at hospitals, clinics and HIV/AIDS centres located in the Togolese capital of Lomé. The placements are well-equipped by local standards and will give you a full experience of medical practice in a developing country.
As a nurse, you will see a wide variety of treatments and also provide much-needed support to patients. The hospitals and clinics where we work provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your nursing and healthcare skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you would not normally see in Europe or North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis.
Your role will be that of a nursing intern. The Togolese approach to the treatment of patients is very different to what you will be used to. As such, you will spend a minimum of a week simply observing. As you get familiar with treatments and the way things are done in Togo, and if you demonstrate a good knowledge of nursing, you may get a more hands-on role.
Options for Nursing in Togo
Volunteers who have some experience and are already studying nursing, work at one of two public hospitals. There is the opportunity to work in a variety of departments such as paediatrics, obstetrics, ENT and orthopaedics.
If you have no experience but wish to volunteer in the nursing field you are welcome to join us in Togo. You will work with doctors and nurses in small private clinics where you can observe and learn from consultations and minor surgeries. There is also the option to volunteer at HIV/AIDS centres, which give free treatment and consultations to patients. Here you can help to raise awareness and teach about safety, acceptance and tolerance.
You will have a dedicated Projects Abroad Medical Coordinator, who will act as your supervisor. They will introduce you at the hospital or clinic, discuss your interests with you and confirm your schedule in agreement with the medical staff at the hospital or clinic for the duration of your stay.
Requirements for Volunteering in Togo
Volunteers on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.
While volunteering in Togo you will stay with one of our welcoming local host families. You will be able to explore what the local area has to offer with our Projects Abroad volunteer community.
You can join the Nursing project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the hospital or clinics please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
