We have medical placements for volunteers at hospitals, clinics and HIV/AIDS centres located in the Togolese capital of Lomé. Whatever your experience, you will have the chance to work in a range of medical settings. The placements are well-equipped by local standards, and will give you a full experience of medical practice in a developing country. As well as the opportunity to see a wide variety of treatments, volunteers may also provide much-needed support to patients.

Upon arrival you will meet the Projects Abroad Medical Coordinator, who will act as your supervisor. He will introduce you at the hospital or clinic, discuss your interests with you and confirm your schedule in agreement with the medical staff at the hospital or clinic for the duration of your stay. Your role is that of an intern.

The hospitals and clinics where we work provide an excellent backdrop for learning and improving your medicine and healthcare skills. You will find yourself coming into contact with conditions that you would not normally see in Europe or North America, such as malaria and typhoid, on an almost daily basis.

Options for Medicine Volunteers

Volunteer Medical placements in Togo

Volunteers with no experience in the medical field are welcome to join us and work with doctors and nurses in small private clinics where you can observe and learn from consultations and minor surgeries, you can also spend time in the laboratory, paediatric and maternity wards.

There is also the option to volunteer at HIV/AIDS centres, which give free treatment and consultations to patients. Here volunteers help to raise awareness and teach about safety, acceptance and tolerance.

Volunteers who have some experience and are already studying medicine, work at one of two public hospitals. There is the opportunity to work in a variety of departments including paediatrics, psychiatry/psychotherapy, dentistry, radiology, obstetrics, maternity, ears, nose and throat, dermatology, chemical pathology, orthopaedics, pathology, haematology, anaesthesia and neurology.

Outreach Work in Togo

Volunteers joining our medical related projects in Togo will have the chance to attend regular medical outreach visits to orphanages, where children with minor wounds receive treatment and volunteers run educational awareness talks on topics like hygiene, dental care and HIV/AIDS. Depending on the number of volunteers and their specific skills and qualifications, we also sometimes run visits to more rural villages to treat specific complaints or give educational presentations.

Volunteers on all medical related projects in Togo need a good level of French. Most of the staff and patients do not speak English and it is vital that you can understand and communicate in French while you are working in the hospital.

While volunteering as a Medicine volunteer in Togo, you will stay with one of our local host families. You will be able to meet and socialise with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore what the local area has to offer with them.

You can join a Medical Project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. These projects have been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the placement and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the hospital or centre please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Togo Medicine & Healthcare Management Plan.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
