Cambodia: Volunteer Human Rights Internships and Work Experience

Our Human Rights placements in Cambodia are based in the capital city of Phnom Penh. The placements give volunteers the opportunity to work on a really worthwhile project alongside a respected humanitarian organisation, whilst also gaining first-hand experience of human rights law in practice.

Volunteers must have completed at least three years of a related undergraduate degree and have a keen interest in human rights issues. Post-graduate volunteers with related degrees and relevant work experience are also encouraged to apply.

Volunteers need to commit to at least 2 months on a Human Rights placement in Cambodia.

Human Rights volunteers work with one of our partner Human Rights organisations in Phnom Penh. The organisations are not-for-profit NGOs which focus on a variety of Human Rights issues, promoting human rights, legal education and consultation. The organisations work to represent local communities and develop laws that are in the public interest. They also train groups like the Employers Council in workers’ rights and train Commune councils so they understand the rights communities possess.

Recent areas that these organisations have been involved in include educating pregnant women on the labour laws and promoting housing rights, helping groups that have been evicted from certain areas gain compensation for losing their land.

Gap Year Human Rights projects in Cambodia

Your precise role will be determined by your background and level of interest in specific areas. Volunteers work under the supervision of the local staff and depending which organisation you join you could be working in some of the following areas: labour, good governance, natural resources, access to justice, housing rights or workers rights (in the fields of farming, food, civil service, tourist service and clothing factory workers).

The vast majority of the work is usually office based, though you may occasionally have the opportunity to undertake site visits within Phnom Penh, attend meetings or workshops or visit one of the provinces.

All volunteers can expect to be involved in researching and collecting documents which support the project you are working on, compiling reports, translating documents, checking English text and editing and translating reports.

You will need to have excellent spoken and written English and should be flexible, pro-active, communicate well and work hard. Placements are certainly demanding and must be taken seriously; you will be representing a professional organisation.
