Journalism volunteer in Tanzania shows staff his work

The Projects Abroad Print Journalism project is perfect for volunteers with an interest in media and a passion for writing or photography. As a volunteer on this project, you will have the opportunity to put together a portfolio of varied work and, at the same time, gain invaluable journalism experience while living in one of the most vibrant countries in Africa.

Volunteering on a Journalism Project

Journalism volunteers write content for a quarterly or bi-monthly publication that focuses on a range of topics, such as news, travel, business, local events and fashion in Tanzania. Projects Abroad works closely with two magazines. Both are dynamic and growing, reaching out to a wide audience throughout Tanzania. One magazine focuses on educating and informing the youth about a wide range of topics and has over 24,000 readers. In contrast, the other publication reaches out to business entrepreneurs, and publishes approximately 5,000 copies every two months.

Volunteers hold a meeting at their Journalism project

As a volunteer on the Print Journalism placement, you will work in a dynamic team of local freelance journalists at the magazine’s head office in Dar es Salaam. Your main tasks will involve preparing articles, writing reports, research, marketing, attending staff meetings, and updating and working on various social media platforms.

Volunteers who have a passion for photography have the opportunity to take their own photographs that can be used to accompany articles in magazines or on social media sites. You will also be given the option to record short videos for various interviews that will be posted on the magazine’s website.

Your working hours will be from 9am to 4pm, Monday to Friday; and you are advised to bring your own laptop and digital camera to use during your placement. Journalism is a fairly self-motivated field and although the project offers a wide array of opportunities, volunteers who are proactive and show a high level of initiative will have the most fulfilling experience on this placement.

The print journalism option is available from three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community, please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
