Projects Abroad volunteers on the Khmer Culture & Community project in Cambodia

Experience all that modern Cambodia has to offer by joining our Khmer Project Grown-up Special. This unique project explores Khmer culture and traditions, and focuses on cultural immersion in one of Asia’s poorest yet most fascinating countries. Learn about the country’s past, present and people while living as part of Cambodian society.

Cultural exchange is a great way to expand your horizons and deepen your understanding of another community. During this project, you will experience first-hand many aspects of Cambodian culture, far beyond what an everyday tourist would ever be exposed to.

You will still get to visit the many famous sites in Phnom Penh like the National Museum and the Killing Fields, but you will also have the opportunity to learn from the local people. This will include lessons in the Khmer language, which can be incredibly helpful during your project. There is also a wide range of practical activities which you will get involved in, including cooking lessons, traditional music and dance workshops, and puppet and clay pot making classes.

To truly become one with the community and get to know the local people, you will spend a few days living and lending a helping hand in a traditional, rural village. You may even be asked to spend a couple of hours helping the local children with basic English lessons.

Over the weekend, social activities will be organised for you to ensure you get the most out of your free time. After your project work, you will be able to relax with the other volunteers and explore the sites within the local community. By living and spending money on local activities and products during your stay, you will be contributing to the economic growth of these communities.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
