Start your Pharmaceutical career by travelling to a developing country and completing a structured and supervised Pharmacy Elective. Choosing to complete your Pharmacy Elective in Ghana will not only be an excellent career choice, but also a life-changing one.
You will be placed in direct contact with a professional pharmacy manager or clinical pharmacist who will supervise and guide you through your placement. They will introduce you to the welcoming staff and patients, but special attention will also be given to helping you acclimatise to your new surroundings. Your time will be spent in a teaching hospital or local pharmacy.
Your role on a Pharmacy Elective in Ghana
After your country and work induction is completed, you will observe and assist the supervisor assigned to you for the duration of your elective. Use this time to familiarise yourself with the pharmaceutical practices in the placement. Elective students are also encouraged to share their pharmaceutical or related knowledge with the staff to better serve the community and improve local practices. On a daily basis you will learn more about the healthcare practices in this developing country. This will test your theoretical knowledge, motivating you to think on your feet and apply yourself to situations you are not familiar with.
Your role is to assist local pharmacists during daily pharmaceutical care services. Volunteers will complete ward rounds with the pharmacy and medical teams, supervise the outpatient dispensing and drug information services, and assist pharmacists with clinical pharmacy practices.
Outreach projects in Ghana
Part of your duties on the Pharmacy Elective in Ghana is to engage with outlying communities that are not able to access or receive medical attention. You will take part in outreach projects, visiting small villages and under supervision, provide people with the prescribed medication and attention they need.
Most universities have deadlines by which time your Pharmacy Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or pharmacy in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto the Ghana Pharmacy Elective placement with us.
If your university or institution has no set requirements, we still advise that you apply as early as possible.
If you are not an Elective student or would rather take part in our standard Medical projects, please see our Standard Medicine & Healthcare Projects page.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
