Projects Abroad will be available to liaise with your university to make sure your placement can fulfil the requirements of your Elective. Our in-country staff are experienced with co-ordinating with Elective students. When you are in Tanzania you have a dedicated supervisor who is a qualified member of staff.
Your supervisor will be your mentor throughout your stay. They will be available to discuss specific cases with you, and answer your questions. The staff you will be placed with will ensure you learn a lot about Nursing in their medical facility.
Your Elective Placement in Tanzania
You will be placed in either a health clinic or a large government hospital. Where you are placed will depend upon your chosen specialism. You could spend time in surgery, maternity, general medicine, paediatrics, palliative care and work with HIV patients.
Your role will be mainly observational and you will shadow doctors and nurses throughout their day. This may include ward rounds, clinics and observing operations. If you make the effort to become a valuable part of the team, you could get given more to do. This may include taking blood pressure, weighing and measuring patients, dressing wounds, passing equipment and removing plaster casts.
Outreach Work in Tanzania
Projects Abroad organise regular medical outreach projects and workshops in Dar es Salaam and Arusha. These involve providing healthcare to disadvantaged communities in outlying areas who would otherwise not have access to medical care. This provides you with the opportunity to carry out extremely valuable work in a community based environment and will give you a greater understanding of the medical system in Tanzania.
While you are undertaking your role as a nurse in Tanzania, you will live with one of our local host families. You can spend your free time with our enthusiastic volunteer community, exploring the area and travelling together.
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
