If you join a Nursing Elective we offer the following nursing specialisms; adult, child, mental health and learning disabilities. Our Nursing Elective students work with the Centros de Salud around Cochabamba and its outskirts. You can get hands-on work experience with some minor medical cases, particularly with vaccination campaigns.
Nursing Elective students participating in the nursing programmes can also get involved in community-outreach programs.
Centros de Salud are public health clinics open to everyone in Cochabamba, regardless of their ability to pay. With very basic facilities, the health clinics attend to mostly minor emergencies, accidents and routine visits. There is insufficient funding to maintain the facilities in complete working order, or provide the hospital with sufficient staff or materials. Nursing Elective students and volunteers are therefore needed to help and your work will be greatly appreciated.
Supervision on Your Elective Placement
You will be given a supervisor who will coordinate your placement. They will be keen to test out your knowledge, as well as giving you the benefit of their training and experience. Your supervisor will be qualified and they are experienced in collaborating with Elective students.
If part of your module is to review specific case studies, they are available to discuss these with you. Projects Abroad can liaise with your university to ensure the requirements for your Elective module are met. We can help with any paperwork you may need to complete.
Requirements for Elective Students
Elective students in Bolivia should be aged 18 or older and will need intermediate Spanish in order to communicate directly with the majority of doctors and patients. Many students who lack confidence in their Spanish language ability take a Spanish Language course or join a Teaching or Care project before joining their Medicine & Healthcare programme. This gives you the opportunity to improve your language skills before starting the medical part of your placement.
While in Bolivia, you will live with a host family where you will experience the real day-to-day lives of the Cochabamba community. You can also spend any free time with other Projects Abroad volunteers and explore the wonderful city of Cochabamba.
Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
