As a Midwifery Elective student, you will gain a great deal of valuable work-experience. You will be based in a maternity hospital, or the maternity units of larger hospitals. You will find the facilities are generally of a basic standard, but staff are dedicated and caring and you will learn a lot from working alongside them.

Midwifery Elective volunteer with the director of hospital

Projects Abroad will liaise with your university to ensure your chosen placement fulfils the requirements of your Elective objectives. Our in-country staff are experienced in co-ordinating Elective students and will help you with any pre-departure queries and will support you throughout your stay. A qualified member of staff will be your supervisor, mentoring you while you are at your placement.

Your supervisor will answer your questions and discuss specific case studies with you. They will ensure that you have the opportunity to learn as much as possible during your placement. You will gain a well-rounded understanding of medicine and healthcare in Sri Lanka and in the developing world in general.

Your Role as an Midwifery Elective Student

Your exact role within the hospital will be determined by your level of midwifery experience as well as the enthusiasm and effort which you show to the local staff. Whilst you will mainly shadow staff and learn by observing, by becoming a valued member of the team you may be given more to do.

There are also opportunities to spend time at a hospital specialising in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Although not always directly related to Midwifery, you can still take part in the medical outreach work and workshops that are organised by Projects Abroad. On a monthly basis, you can travel to a local town with qualified doctors to carry out basic medical checks on the local community. This provides you with the opportunity to carry out extremely valuable work in a community based environment.

You will live with a Projects Abroad local host family while you are in Sri Lanka on your Midwifery project. In your free time you will be able to explore the coast and towns of the region with the volunteer community.

Please be aware that most universities have deadlines by which time your Elective application paperwork must be completed. If your university needs information on the hospital or clinic in which you will be placed, or requires forms to be signed by your project supervisor, we strongly advise completing our application form at least one month before this deadline. We can only provide this detailed information once you have applied and been accepted onto an Elective placement with us.
