Volunteers on our Arts & Crafts project in Togo will live and work in the capital city, Lomé. Working in the workshop of an NGO, you will learn how to create local arts and crafts which can then be sold to further finance projects of Portrait d’Afrique-Togo, a local NGO.
You will use your new-found techniques to teach young artists and orphans from the local community, helping them develop their talents and creativity.
This project is perfect for anybody with a keen interest in arts and crafts and provides volunteers with a fantastic opportunity to learn more about the Togolese culture.
Volunteering on the Arts & Crafts Project with Projects Abroad
The majority of your time will be spent alongside local artists in the workshop. They will teach you the art of pottery and show you how to make earrings, bracelets and other jewellery using materials that include shells and beads. You will also learn how to print T-shirts as well as being shown how to make batik decorations.
You will be able to put the skills you have gained at the workshop to further use when visiting local orphanages. By supporting young artists and orphans and nurturing their talents, you can help them build a future for themselves through their art work.
This project is not a full time project so we recommend combining it with a few more hours per week learning about West African dance and djembe drumming, which would give you a real insight into Togolese culture. These projects are perfect for enthusiastic and creative volunteers who have a musical flair. Music is at the heart of Togolese culture, so those with a passion for music will find this placement both enjoyable and rewarding.
You can join the Arts & Crafts project in Togo for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. You will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community. However, please be aware that you may not have the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
