Volunteering on a Care Project in Madagascar with Projects Abroad
Projects Abroad works with a local primary school in Andasibe that provides after-school activities to students from impoverished backgrounds. At your placement, you will help out with these after-school activities that are organised by the school principal. These placements have limited resources, so volunteer assistance is vital to help give children the best care possible. As a volunteer, you will be a welcome pair of helping hands for the local staff.
These afternoon sessions help keep the children busy after school and give them a safe space to learn and have fun. These sessions will be tailored to your skills and interests. You could play sports like basketball, football, and Frisbee and help kids develop their team skills, or start an English conversation club – your options are endless! The children range in age from 3-8 years, but sometimes students up 15 years old may join in the afternoon activities.
In the mornings, volunteers will assist teachers in classes at local primary schools by working one-on-one with students or small groups.
Whether you are helping children learn to read, playing sports with them, or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give will be hugely beneficial. Any skills you have to offer are welcome.
Your Role as a Care Volunteer in Madagascar
Social development, friendship, and support are the key things you can offer as a volunteer. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel and explore.
Projects Abroad is happy to provide extra help to volunteers working on Care Projects. This may include buying some paints or art materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers in Madagascar help to renovate a play area at one of the schools. Suggestions from volunteers are welcomed and we are open to any ideas you may have to help improve the lives of the children with whom you are working.
You can join a Care project in Madagascar for two weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. This project has been selected by our local colleagues as being suitable for short term volunteering for both the host community and the volunteer. Although you will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community please be aware that you may not be able to make the same impact as someone volunteering for a longer period.
This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
