Volunteering on a Care project in the Philippines will be a challenging but also rewarding experience. Whether you are on a gap year, holiday from university or coming to development work as an older volunteer on a career break, you will have a role to play and your contribution will be valued.

Volunteers do arts and crafts activity with Filipino children

In the Philippines many thousands of impoverished urban children are growing up in poverty and are often deprived of basic healthcare and education. Rapid growth and urbanisation means that almost half the country's population now live in towns and cities, with the Philippines now being one of the most urbanised countries in Southeast Asia.

The Philippines is also unfortunately still seeing an increase in the HIV infection rate, with one out of three new cases being in a young person.

Children are therefore particularly vulnerable, but by working and interacting with children you can help to improve their future prospects.

Volunteering on a Care Project with Orphans in the Philippines

We have a variety of Care placements in the Philippines which are all worthwhile projects. Project Abroad volunteers work in centres that focus on children from poor backgrounds or with disabilities or illnesses.

Volunteers usually start work about 4 to 5 hours a day. If you live close to your host family you may return home for lunch, otherwise you will be provided with a packed lunch by your host family. Most volunteers work from Monday to Friday and have the weekends free to travel.

Volunteering Abroad on a Care Project in the Philippines

A Care volunteer plays with the children in the Philippines

Projects Abroad Care volunteers work in Bogo City, Cebu. Volunteers are needed to help at the day care centres, kindergartens and special education centres as an extra pair of hands assisting the local staff, you may be feeding the children, teaching them personal hygiene or helping them get ready for the day.

On a social level interaction, friendship and support are the key things you can offer when on this placement. Whether you are helping children complete their homework, playing sports or teaching them a new game, the time and attention you give to them is invaluable. Any skills or talents you have are welcomed.

You can read more detailed information about the aims of the project in our Philippines Care Management Plan.

Projects Abroad are happy to provide extra help to volunteers on the Care Projects, this may include buying some paints or art materials or arranging a day where all the volunteers help to renovate a play area at one of the homes. Suggestions from volunteers are welcomed and we are open to any ideas you may have to help make the lives of these children brighter.

You can join the Care project in the Philippines for two or three weeks if you don't have time to join us for four weeks or more. You will gain a valuable cultural insight and work intensely within the local community. However, please be aware that you may not have the same impact as someone participating for a longer period.

This placement is fully researched, safety audited and risk assessed in accordance with the British Standard BS8848 for the Adventure Travel Sector.
